The parent company of the publisher of Dungeons & Dragons, W, acquired D&D Beyond, the company's role-playing game digital toolkit Wizards. the company bought D&D Beyond To the owner Fandom in a $146.3 billion deal. W is a subsidiary of the toy manufacturer Hasbro, which bought the company in 1999.

Fandom, which hosts sites for supporters of popular movie, game, and TV titles, bought D&D Beyond and the rest of the company's media assets in 2017, game modules and community tools from Curse, which was in the process of being absorbed by an agreement with Twitch.

"D&D Beyond has been one of our most valued partners in the digital space for the past six years and we are excited to attract best-in-class talent to our team,” said Cynthia Williams, president of W. "The team of D&D Beyond has built an incredible digital platform, and together we will deliver the best possible Dungeons & Dragons experience for players around the world."

D&D Beyond is a companion in the world of digital gaming that is ubiquitous enough on the scene that no one can be blamed for thinking that Wizards I already owned it. The company's website and app serve as a kind of digital Swiss Army Knife for D&D players, offering everything from character creation and space building to digital dice. The app, which offers various subscription levels along with basic free access, already has more than 10 million users.

Before the deal, Wizards y D&D Beyond they already collaborated closely, with the latter hosting exclusive digital access to all official D&D sourcebooks. This deal has long been a source of consternation among players reluctant to buy back a digital copy of a physical book they already own, with some hopeful that pairing digital access with paper source books could be in the acquisition agreement.

Wizards organized a live broadcast special event on YouTube and Twitch on April 21, 2022 to learn more about their plans. The trailer shows a somewhat out-of-place game map, miniatures, and Xbox controller, so it will also introduce new game titles or a proper release date for Baldur's Gate 3, the upcoming RPG adventure developed by Divinity: Larian. , creator of original sin.

Business is booming for W, which also publishes the popular strategy card game Magic: The Gathering. Between the pandemic forcing people to get creative about long-distance socializing and the vast supply of live hit games like Critical Role, the biggest winner of Twitch, Wizards seems to be expanding the RPG's audience by a significant order of magnitude. The company brought more than 1.3 billion dollars in revenue in 2021 And with movie and TV spinoffs of the sprawling fantasy multiverse in the works, this scenario is only going to get bigger and bigger.
