Zaya Care partners with insurers to change the model of maternity care

Despite being the country that spends the most on health care per capita, the United States leads the world in maternal mortality. And health inequity plays an important role.

Zaya Care founded by Leoni Runge, operates in the United States but follows the European model of maternal care and wants to change things, for the maternal results in the old continent they are superior.

Right now, one of the biggest problems pregnant women and new mothers face is that their gynecologist's care ends as soon as they leave the hospital after giving birth. Much of the care they need in the postpartum period must be provided by other types of specialists, such as pelvic floor therapists, postpartum mental health care providers, acupuncturists, and others.

Unfortunately, however, most of these specialists are not covered by insurance companies. And those that are present are rare, while others can cost quite a bit. The reason for this is that many of these specialists have their own small practice, and the administrative burden of working alongside insurance providers is high, for lower income.

Zaya is working to bring these providers together and negotiate on your behalf with insurance providers, handling the administrative side of things and earning better income.

The startup's CEO, Runge, grew up in Germany, where her sister is an OB/GYN. She saw how the medical system there covered the entire pregnancy experience, from conception to postpartum care, with service providers even seeing the patient in her own home.

Addressing the problem in the United States was not a matter of creating a great product, although the administrative functionality of the Zaya It is mission critical. Rather, it was about solving distribution, both on the provider side and on the patient side.

In a recent conversation with "like-minded companies" Kanyi Maqubela explained that, for healthtech companies, distribution es the product.

At this time, Zaya is associated with Emblem Health, Aetna and United Healthcare, and is working to attract more insurance providers to the platform. Currently, the platform has 50 providers visible and available to patients, with more than 500 on the waiting list to be screened and join Zaya.

CityBlock he is the leader in trying to reorganize the health care system while working within existing confines. Runge explained that Toyin Ajayi, co-founder and president of CityBlock, is actually an investor in the round and has been instrumental in preparing the platform and the product.

The startup recently raised a $7.6 million round led by Inspired Capital, with participation from Story Ventures, Tiger Global, Operator Partners, and founders and executives from Oscar Health, Dispatch Health, and Headway.

Zaya It's not the first company to acknowledge the problem with maternity care. mombox seeks to offer moms a curated kit of postnatal products to help a mother through her first few weeks of recovery. Oula, poppyseedhealth, oova and of course bigger companies like modernfertility everyone is entering this space of service.
