Motel One says ransomware gang stole credit card data

Motel One, one of Europe's largest hotel chains, has confirmed that it was the target of a ransomware attack in which hackers accessed customer data.

Motel One is a German low-budget hotel chain that operates 90 hotels in Europe and the United States.

The company said in a short statement which was the target of a “hacker attack” after a group of unknown perpetrators infiltrated its network with the intention of launching a ransomware attack.

While Motel One says the impact of the attack was kept at a "relative minimum" due to unspecified measures the company took, it confirmed that the attackers were able to access some customer data. According to Motel One, this includes address data and details of 150 credit cards.

Motel One's statement comes days after the company was listed on ransomware gang ALPHV's dark web leak site. The group claims to have stolen several terabytes of data from the company, including some customer information. Some of the data, which the ransomware gang claims to be employee and customer information, has been seen.

Motel One spokesman Inken Mende did not respond to questions. It is not yet known how the company was compromised or how it allegedly thwarted the attack.

Motel One claims its business operations were “never at risk” due to the incident.

News of the Motel One attack comes weeks after MGM Resorts, which operates several hotels and casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, was attacked by Scattered Spider, a group of hackers believed to be a subgroup of the gang. ALPHV ransomware. MGM has yet to confirm whether the attack, which caused widespread disruption at all of its resorts, compromised the customer data.
