TikTok says he will invest 12 billion euros as part of an ongoing effort to curry favor with European regulators, and they have already started work on their Norwegian data center.
The short-form social video company has been working hard in recent years to convince the world that it is not beholden to its parent company ByteDance in China, efforts that were not supported by revelations last year that employees based in China could access the data of users in Europe and the United States
However, TikTok has made a number of commitments that strive to address concerns about its data use practices in light of the European Digital Services Act (DSA). These commitments have been grouped into an initiative called Clover Project, which includes the opening of local data centers in Europe and the introduction of new data access and control processes.
Data migration
The company's promised €12.000 billion investment spans the next 10 years and includes funding not only for three data centers, but also for ongoing work with an external security company called NCC Group which previously announced it would conduct audits of its data controls and practices.
After many delays, TikTok began moving European user data to its first data center in Ireland in September, a process it hopes to complete by the end of 2024. It also revealed plans for a second data center in Ireland, plus a third in the Hamar region of Norway, which will apparently run on 100% renewable energy.
According to TikTok, it has already taken possession of the first of the three buildings and will begin installing servers with a view to migrating the data of European users starting next summer. The two additional buildings will be added shortly after.
