Digital Identity in Europe: Blockchain

There should be no one in the market who does not agree that BlockChain technology will be one of the keys to the future. Safety, its philosophy of sharing capabilities, traceability, flexibility, etc. make it a relevant success factor.

Even so, it still has two important challenges:

  • Still don't have a unique reference of Blockchain, which favors the constant appearance of new services offered by third parties but without the security for the final developers of creating a future-proof and adaptable solution. Companies such as Microsoft, Oracle or IBM have BlockChain cloud services (BaaS, BlockChain as a Service), but each of them has installed a version Fabric different and evolved or supplemented according to its own criteria and the needs of its customers.
  • The initiatives carried out are isolated. Promoted by a company or organization. Blockchain is designed to be an open environment with different nodes that are equal in governance, roles, and responsibilities. As long as an initiative has a private sponsor, or one with clearly own interests, it will have difficulty developing

Digital Identity – The initiative of the European Commission aimed at creating a single digital identity is the Verifiable Credentials Data Model 1.0. The objective is to define what a "credential" is, its association to the natural and legal person, its security, encryption models, recognition, interoperability, etc. This initiative is passed in 2 technologies/axis of procedures or compliance.

W3C Verifiable Credentials. Documentation and standards.

Blockchain. As a global repository of the Identities of legal persons (never natural persons). The Blockchain stores the Trusted List of entities that can issue certificates, and the types of certificates that each entity can issue. Said entities (for example Governments, Companies, Administrations, etc.). Everything related to Blockchain based on the work of the EBSI (European Blockchain Services Infrastructure)

Despite the fact that they want to have all the standards closed this year, from the EEC they believe that this initiative will have a period of 5 to 12 years to be implemented globally and that it is part of the daily life of European citizens (culture, change management, affiliation of countries and entities, training, etc.)
