Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi bring satellite communication to their devices from Qualcomm

Qualcomm announced in the Mobile World Congress (MWC) that several phone manufacturers including Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Motorola, Nada and Honor will add satellite communication features to their phones. However, the manufacturers did not give details about which devices will get these features first and when the carriers will release them.

Qualcomm introduced its Snapdragon Satellite technology in collaboration with satellite service provider Iridium at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) a few months ago. Thanks to this solution, smartphones will be able to send two-way text messages and other messaging applications through satellites in emergency situations.

The chipmaker said Snapdragon Satellite will be available in upcoming RF modems and various 8-series and 4-series processor models for smartphones.

“By embedding Snapdragon Satellite into next-generation devices, our partners will be able to deliver satellite messaging capabilities through a mature, commercially available global LEO constellation, which can enable subscribers around the world to communicate with service providers from outside. as well as with family and friends," Qualcomm vice president of product management Francesco Grilli said in a statement.

Last year, Apple introduced emergency satellite communication features with the iPhone 14 series, first in the United States and Canada, and later in France, Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom through Globestar's satellite network. A few weeks ago, Samsung also announced its own satellite technology and promised to integrate it into a future smartphone.

In addition, British smartphone maker Bullitt - which also announced its own satellite technology at CES - announced a rugged smartphone with satellite connectivity a few days before MWC. Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek will also present its satellite connectivity solution for smartphones at MWC. This lays the groundwork for future smartphones with satellite emergency communication capabilities for remote areas where network connectivity is unreliable.
