The new bikes from Rad Power Bikes

Rad Power Bikes, the US-based electric bike manufacturer, has made its mark as a direct-to-consumer business selling fat tire bikes that helped shape the COVID electric bike boom. In 2021, the company raised two massive rounds: $150 million in February 2021 and other $154 million just eight months later, which pushed his total funding above and beyond what he secured VanMoof, Europe's favorite electric bike.

Why are investors so interested in the company, and why are these bikes gaining popularity?

La radrunner 2, an update to the highly successful RadRunner utility bike from bike with step box, It went on sale in December 2021 for $1,499 and comes in black or forest green. La Rad Expand 5 launched in April as a folding electric bike to $1599. It comes in black or white.

Pedal Assist Display Rad Power Bikes

Both the RadRunner 2 and RadExpand 5 have a simple screen to turn the bike on and off, choose a level of pedal assistance, and turn on the lights.

The two bikes have very similar look, feel and specs. This is what they have in common:

  • Engine: 750W brushless gear hub motor
  • Maximum speed: 20 miles per hour (unless you're flying downhill, then you can definitely go faster)
  • Battery: 672Wh; can be loaded on the bike or removed to load inside
  • Rank: 25 to 45 miles
  • Brakes: mechanical disc brakes
  • Other things: Simple LED display, buzzer, 4 pedal assist settings, half-twist throttle

This is what is the same, but different:

  • Both bikes come with an optional front rack and integrated rear rack, but their payload capabilities differ. For example, the RadExpand rear rack maximum load is 59 lbs., But RadRunner can handle 120 lbs.
  • The supports are also different. RadExpand is a regular style kickstand, but RadRunner is a spring loaded two legged kickstand, which is much harder to push. Furthermore, although both bikes have front, rear and brake LED lights, RadRunner 2's taillights not only indicate when you're braking, they also have a flash mode.
  • Both are very easy to turn on by holding the ON button. Many suburbanites don't actually lock their bikes, but leave them in the shed, making it easy to steal. For a smart bike, it would be great to see an anti-theft locking system.
  • Finally, both the RadRunner and RadExpand have fat, puncture-resistant tires, but the amount of grease differs with each bike. The RadRunner has 20 x 2,2-inch tires, and the RadExpand's tires are 20 x 4-inch.

Overall, both bikes are a dream to ride, and for the price and the convenience of delivery to your door and Rad's mobile service network for testing, buying, and repairing bikes, there's not much bad to say about the bikes. .
