Akamai acquires Linode for $900 million

By saying Akamai is primarily thought of as a content delivery network, but also offers security and computing services, has just acquired Linode. The acquisition price is $900 million, and Akamai wait to Linode add about 100 million in revenue in fiscal year 2022.

Linode, founded in 2003, quickly made a name for itself as an affordable provider for renting virtual private servers. That was shortly before AWS made cloud computing a buzzword and, at the time, VPSs were the way to host your own websites or basic web applications. Since then, the company has continued to expand its offerings as both hyperclouds and competitors such as DigitalOcean began to emerge. Unlike some of its competitors, Linode never participated in a financing round.

Today, Linode offers all of the core cloud services developers have come to expect (just like most early VPS providers). That includes compute, but also block and object storage, managed database, load balancers, and more recently, a managed Kubernetes service for running containerized applications.

Akamai says he is buying Linode to help it "become the world's most distributed computing platform, from the cloud to the enterprise edge."

“The opportunity to combine the developer-friendly cloud computing capabilities of Linode with the cutting-edge platform and market-leading security services of Akamai is transformative for Akamai”, said the CEO and co-founder of Akamai, Dr. Tom Leighton in today's announcement. “Akamai has pioneered the edge computing business for over 20 years, and today we're excited to begin a new chapter in our evolution by creating a single cloud platform for building, running, and protecting applications from cloud to desktop. perimeter. This is a great opportunity for developers who will now be able to build the next generation of applications on a platform that offers unprecedented scalability, reach, performance, reliability and security.”

Linode will continue to work as usual for the time being and the company says that Akamai "He has no intention of changing what has given us success."

“There is a natural synergy between Akamai y Linode, not only in our missions and cultures, but also in the powerful combination of strengths that each one brings”, writes the founder of LinodeChristopher Aker. “The union of the computing and storage products of Linode with serverless, CDN and security solutions from Akamai It will provide customers with a broader range of services to build, modernize and scale the next generation of applications.”
