Twine Acquires Glimpse to Lead the Zoom Events Market

Twine, a company that provides tools for virtual events and remote teams, will bring its services to Zoom thanks to its recently closed acquisition of the Y Combinator-backed startup, glimpse, which has developed a quick contact platform designed for virtual events. The idea of glimpse is to offer a way to facilitate the connections that normally take place at real-world events and bring them online by matching attendees in video chats using artificial intelligence. Recently, glimpse had been testing a new integration that would allow event hosts to add fast networking to their Zoom meetings, webinars, and events.

This integration is powered by Zoom's new "Breakout Room" APIs, to which glimpse and some others had access from the beginning. Although both companies were working on a similar workspace to connect people remotely, the Zoom integration of glimpse accelerated them in front Twine in product development. The co-founder and CEO of Twine, Lawrence Coburn, admits that his company even lost some deals with glimpse.

With this acquisition, the technology of glimpse will be available to customers Twine, including its expansion plans to reach a broader Zoom user base.

A group of solutions built using Zoom's new meeting room APIs will be added to its app store, the Zoom App Marketplace, which today houses dozens of apps designed to work within the Zoom client itself or expand its capabilities in other ways. . The upcoming "twine for Zoom" product will be among them, offering customers access to blending, networking, and other virtual tools that can be used not only for virtual events, but also for other types of meetings, such as social events of the company, global meetings, selection of new employees, meetings with the customer community, and others.

“We admire the team and the products of glimpse have been around for a long time and we are delighted to partner with them,” said Coburn. “What they have managed to build within the Zoom ecosystem is extraordinary, with groundbreaking impact for remote teams and virtual events.”

Although it was a relatively young company with little revenue, glimpse it had grown to 150 clients and had a waiting list of 700 more companies interested in using its platform. These ranged from edtech companies to VCs and even enterprise clients. The latter attracted more Twine, which already had large companies using its tools, including Amazon, Microsoft, and eBay, for example.

"glimpse is a great example of a highly innovative company using the Zoom App Marketplace to improve the customer experience,” said Ross Mayfield, product manager, Zoom Apps & Integrations. I look forward to seeing the team Twine bring to market Twine for Zoom,” he added.

glimpse had participated in the 2020 winter round of startup accelerator Y Combinator and had seed investment from YC and Maven Ventures. Its co-founders, Helena Merk and Brian Li, will remain with the team to be available during the transition. However, his team of three employees joins Twine, which now has 16 full-time employees. The terms of the acquisition are not disclosed, as it is a small departure, given the early nature of both companies. However, it is a stock deal in the seven-figure range.
