The rise of remote work drives Firstbase

In a more hybrid world, with companies large and small trying to figure out how they will balance employees in the office and staff working remotely, there is some curiosity as to how first base is planning for the future.

The startup helps clients onboard remote staff, ensuring new employees receive the right hardware when they need it. Anyone who has made a job change during the pandemic probably knows that bringing technological products to new employees is not always a simple process, a fact that is aggravated as the physical distance between corporate offices and employees grows. individual workers.

The company has expanded its feature set. first base it still helps new customer workers choose hardware, handle shipping and retrieval, and administration. Added financing to the offering mix. Now for a regular fee, first base allows customers to pay for employees' new hardware and other remote-controlled office peripherals, such as furniture, on a regular basis.

Growth in a hybrid era

The key question for first base it's how he fits into a world that is partially returning to office work. After posting metrics for the past few quarters, including 16x revenue growth since April 2021, and 7x customer growth over a similar time period, will the market be less welcoming than before to the employee service product? remote from first base?

Founder and CEO Chris Herd said that companies with hybrid work teams are using first base to bring hardware to office workers as well as those who work from home. Herd said the mix of clients from first base is quite divided, but that some supposedly hybrid companies are still largely remote.

The future of work continues to be in flux. But what first base is building can fit perfectly into the world of the office. The startup is planning storage capacity in the US, UK and Europe. That physical footprint allows the startup to manage its flow of devices to and from employees, limiting the delay from need to delivery. During a global chip shortage, offloading critical supply chain work to a third party could be attractive to companies looking for more labor.

first base it also has plans to become a mobile device management (MDM) business, in addition to its current activities. MDMs like JAMF, now public, do work around the device beyond the delivery and physical care of them. Herd said that two years ago, building MDM capabilities were already under study within first base. Now their customers are asking for them to plug into existing MDM tools and HRIS (Human Resources Information System) software systems, rather than replace existing tools.

Si first base sells enough to SMBs that lack MDM tools, their goal is to create a simple tool and service for their smaller customers.

Regardless, Herd said that after his company is working with startups, it is scaling up in maturity for clients that need to hire hundreds or thousands of workers. That means six-figure deals instead of five-figure deals.

first base to date it's been a neat mix of software, hardware and financial technology, which makes it difficult to estimate its gross margins or other economic details at this point.
